Transgenic Production Facility

The Transgenic Production Facility (TPF) is an integral part of the Wales Gene Park providing a resource to scientists who wish to create novel transgenic and knockout strains of mice to advance their study of genetics. In addition, the facility offers strain rederivation, IVF and gamete cryopreservation services. Training for all of the above services is also offered. The TPF provides a high quality service to support both local scientists and those working further afield. The TPF is staffed by highly experienced technicians.

The TPF is housed within a state-of-the-art barried unit, and therefore all services carried out result in mice of an SPF health status.

Service details:

Pronuclear Microinjection
  • To produce transgenic mice
  • DNA construct provided by researcher
  • 200+ embryos injected
  • Tail biopsies sent to researcher
  • Identified Founder transgenics shipped to client
  • All sizes of construct catered for, including YACs and BACs

COST - from £2000

Blastocyst Microinjection
  • To produce mice with specific genes knocked out, or to study development of mutant cells in chimaeric embryos
  • ES Cells provided by researcher
  • 60+ blastocysts injected
  • Chimaeras shipped to client
  • Germline transmission established where requested

COST - from £2000

Rederivation
  • To improve the health status or as an assisted reproductive technique for problem breeders
  • Service tailored to suit your needs
  • Send us cryopreserved or fresh embryos, or core stock of mice
  • SPF mice shipped to the researcher following a clear health screen

COST - from £600

In Vitro Fertilisation
  • For rederivation or assisted reproduction to produce large numbers of offspring
  • Send us fresh or frozen sperm, or male mice
  • A wide range of background strains can be used as embryo donors, to suit the researcher's needs
  • All animals produced will be SPF

COST - from £1000

Cryopreservation
  • Can be used to provide a safeguard against unexpected loss of colonies, to minimise genetic drift over long periods of time and to preserve valuable models where there is no present need to maintain the colony.
  • Embryos cryopreserved at 8-cell stage
  • Sperm cryopreserved from stud males, non breeding or geriatric males, or even recently deceased animals
  • Oocytes cryopreserved for use in IVF
  • Ovaries cryopreserved as an assisted reproductive technique for non-breeding females or as strain storage
  • Viability testing included for all strains cryopreserved

              COST - Subject to requirements

Training
  • The TPF also offers training in all off the aforementioned services, at our facility in Cardiff or at your own laboratory.
